Preventative
Healthcare
Annual or bi-annual comprehensive examinations by a skilled veterinarian are essential in preventing or detecting health problems early.
Comprehensive Physical Exam
During a comprehensive physical exam at the AAHV, Dr. Jordan will assess the following on your pet: cardiovascular system, urinary and reproductive system, central nervous system, eyes, ears, skin, coat, mouth, teeth, gums, body condition and weight.
Blood Parasite
Screen
Blood parasite screens are recommended once a year. The presence of heartworms, a common but treatable blood parasite in dogs, cats, and ferrets, is detected through a simple blood test that screens for heartworm larvae and antigens. Since prevention is our goal, we at the AAHV strongly recommend that all dogs, cats and ferrets be given a heartworm preventative year round. Ehrlichia and Lyme's disease, two tick-borne diseases that can be easily transmitted to dogs, are also part of your dog's parasite screen.
Fecal Examination
This exam is intended to detect the presence of parasites in your pet’s gastrointestinal system. Along with keeping your pet healthy, fecal examinations are particularly important as certain types of these parasites can infect people too. It is essential to have your pet screened every six to twelve months, depending on the parasite preventative he is on.
CBC (Complete
Blood Count) and Chemistry Panel
A CBC is recommended annually, as it is a good indicator for anemia and possible infection. Serum chemistries check liver, kidney and endocrine functions. Together these tests help to assess your pet’s optimum health and may indicate potential health problems before symptoms appear.
